Guide: A list of Gluten Free Foods Available in the CBD (Central Business District)

The following is a list of eateries that are known to have gluten free options in the CBD or Central Business District.    A description will be added to each restaurant’s listing as soon as we get it, along any reviews that we have done of that restaurant.   A more comprehensive guide (with each menu item and ingredient details) will be available for purchase coming soon in 2019.

Aloha Lei

Aloha Lei is a Poké quick-service eatery owned by a really cool gal named Tracy who used to live in Hawaii. It’s her dream to bring authentic Hawaiian culture to New Orleans through the food.  She’s well educated on gluten and tries really hard to please gluten free customers.  She has various protein and rice options as well as veggies, and many of the sauces are safe.   Last I talked to her, she was trying to source gluten free crabmeat, just for us!

If you’re hungry downtown, you should check out Aloha Lei! They have all natural poke bowls that are a beautiful hybrid of Hawaiian and New Orleanian culture.

The only gluten contaminated topping/protein is the crabmeat, the owner is still trying to find a gluten free imitation crab.

Additionally, you should specify the gluten free/vegan poke sauce, because some of the sauces have soy sauce.

This restaurant works very hard to prevent cross contamination, so please tell them if you’re GI or Celiac!

Located at 801 Magazine. (Hit up Mac & Moon for dessert!)

Carmo

Carmo is a really cute Tropical  restaurant (there are a lot of Brazilian, Peruvian, Panamanian options)  serving fresh breakfast, lunch and dinner options.  Lunch is more casual and tends to be things like salads and sandwiches (served on a plantain “bun”),  and dinner is more elegant, but either way it’s delicious.    Don’t miss the Yucca rolls!   These rolls filled with cheese are served warm and for once, you won’t have to be the person waiting at the table when everyone else is tearing up the bread basket.

Two reviews below:

Had a wonderful dinner at Carmo last night! So many awesome Gf options! And I love love love that yucca bread!

Fresh Brazilian flavors served as a salad or on a plaintain, and gluten free (tapioca flour) cheese bread! We love this place! Get to Carmo!

Drago’s

Drago’s  – If you are visiting New Orleans, and can only get one food from one restaurant, you HAVE to go to Drago’s and get their Charbroiled Oysters. It is an absolute must.   These oysters are shucked fresh (I think they go through something ridiculous like 20000 a day),  and are basically barbecued, and they have an amazing parmesan cheese and garlic butter topping on them.   It’s one of the best things you’ll ever have in your entire life.  There are other restaurants in town that feature Charbroiled oysters but Drago’s is one of the few that I know of in this area (they also have a location in Metairie.  I also included them on the French Quarter list because it’s within walking distance).

Besides the oysters, you’ll also want to look at their gluten free menu which is pretty comprehensive and amazing.  I included a link here: https://www.dragosrestaurant.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/gluten-free-menu.pdf

Or, maybe you’ll just want to order 2-3 dozen oysters. No one will judge you for that, but I might be mad that you didn’t invite me.

As a side note, although the oysters are gluten free, they ARE served with a piece of French Bread on top.  I posted this particular picture because I wanted y’all to be able to see that.  Make sure you specify for them to put the bread on the side.

Address:  Located inside the Hilton Riverside Hotel at 2 Poydras Street, New Orleans, LA 70130.

Red Gravy

Red Gravy is a tiny little Italian restaurant owned by a New Jersey native who relocated to New Orleans.  The food is out of this world unbelievable!  There are two tiny con’s:  one,  that the owner can be a little aggressive to people who seem as though they don’t understand or appreciate her food,  and two, that Red Gravy is open odd hours, I think it’s like 11-5 or something like that.   Definitely check the schedule before you go.   After you get past the craft store-like decorations,  you will have the BEST ITALIAN FOOD YOU’VE EVER HAD and there are some jaw-dropping gluten free options (pasta, pasta, pasta).

Re the owner: make sure she knows that you are gluten-intolerant / Celiac, she will go OUT OF HER WAY to help you.   If she thinks you’re picky, not so much.  She once made my boyfriend (who hates egg) put an egg on his burger to take a picture of it.  But, he’s not allergic to it.    But, she also helped him scour the city to find the same GF pasta she uses in her meals, because she knows I love it so much (if you’re wondering, it’s Cappello’s).

We went there for a first date and it was one of the best eating experiences of my life.   Truly jawdropping.  Read the review below.      It’s a little pricy, but an amazing special treat!

Had the most delicious gluten free pasta yesterday at Red Gravy! It comes in a variety of ways, pictured is the breakfast pasta. It’s like, the best food I’ve ever had, y’all. To be clear the gluten free pasta isn’t made fresh anymore (due to a fear of cross contamination in a busy kitchen), but it’s still a really high quality pasta combined with fresh local ingredients. Make sure to check them out ASAP for the “graviest” of experiences!
